Overview

83 is a 2021 Indian Hindi-language sports biographical drama film directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Kabir Khan. The film is based on the Indian national cricket team’s victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. The film stars Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, the captain of the Indian team, with Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Dhairya Karwa, Nishant Dahiya, Sahil Khattar, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, and R Badree in supporting roles.

The film begins with a black-and-white opening sequence of the 1983 Cricket World Cup Final on 25 June 1983 between India and West Indies. During the second innings when India is fielding, Madan Lal bowls toward Viv Richards who is on strike. Richards lofts the ball in the air for a six but results in getting caught out by Kapil Dev. The film then shifts to 30 May 1983 at the BCCI office in Mumbai where the BCCI officials get an invitation to the Cricket World Cup. Sunil Gavaskar is dropped from captaincy and Kapil Dev is made the captain. The cricketers who are in the squad namely Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Kirti Azad, Madan Lal, and Sunil Valson are already there in England playing County Cricket.

The Indian team starts their campaign with a loss against West Indies. They then win against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. In the quarter-finals, they face Australia and win by 3 wickets. In the semi-finals, they face England and win by 6 wickets. In the final, they face West Indies again, this time defeating them by 43 runs to win the Cricket World Cup for the first time.

The film ends with a montage of the Indian team celebrating their victory. The film was released on 24 December 2021 and received positive reviews from critics. It was also a commercial success, grossing over ₹350 crore worldwide.
